TikTok, one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, faces a critical deadline in the United States. A law passed in 2024 requires ByteDance, TikTok’s China-based parent company, to divest its U.S. operations by April 5, 2025, or risk a complete ban. With the deadline fast approaching, questions arise about whether app stores and internet hosting services in the U.S. will be forced to cut ties with TikTok if the divestment does not happen.

Understanding the TikTok Ban Law

The U.S. government has long expressed national security concerns over TikTok, citing fears that user data could be accessed by the Chinese government. In response, the 2024 law mandated that ByteDance must sell its U.S. operations to a domestic company or face a ban that would make TikTok unavailable on app stores and internet hosting platforms in the U.S.

If ByteDance fails to comply, the following measures would take effect:

  • App stores (Google Play & Apple App Store) would be prohibited from offering TikTok for download.
  • Internet service providers and cloud hosting services would be restricted from supporting TikTok’s infrastructure in the U.S.
  • Existing users may experience reduced functionality or total inaccessibility.

Could the Deadline Be Extended?

Former President Donald Trump, who played a key role in previous attempts to ban TikTok, has recently suggested that an extension could be granted. In a recent statement, he expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations for a potential sale, saying, “We have a lot of potential buyers… There’s tremendous interest in TikTok. I’d like to see TikTok remain alive.”

This indicates that the U.S. government may allow more time for a deal to be finalized, potentially preventing an immediate ban.

Who Might Buy TikTok’s U.S. Operations?

Several major companies have shown interest in acquiring TikTok’s U.S. business, including:

1. Oracle

  • Oracle has been a front-runner in past negotiations.
  • The company previously proposed a plan where it would handle U.S. user data to alleviate security concerns.
  • Oracle’s existing cloud infrastructure makes it a strong candidate to manage TikTok’s operations.

2. Amazon

  • Amazon recently submitted a last-minute bid to buy TikTok’s U.S. division.
  • The company aims to expand its influence in social media and online advertising.
  • This could increase competition with Meta (Facebook) and Google in the digital ads market.

If a deal is not finalized before April 5, the U.S. government will have to decide whether to enforce the ban immediately or allow additional time for negotiations.

What Happens If the Ban Takes Effect?

If ByteDance does not comply and the government does not extend the deadline, TikTok could become unavailable in the U.S. due to the following actions:

  • Removal from App Stores: Google Play and the Apple App Store would be required to remove TikTok, preventing new downloads and updates.
  • Service Disruptions: Cloud providers like AWS and Google Cloud could be prohibited from supporting TikTok, leading to performance issues or a complete shutdown.
  • Legal Challenges: ByteDance or TikTok creators could challenge the ban in court, further delaying enforcement.

While the April 5 deadline is fast approaching, the final outcome remains uncertain. The U.S. government has the option to enforce the ban, extend the deadline, or approve a sale to a domestic company. Given the ongoing discussions and potential high-profile buyers like Oracle and Amazon, it is possible that TikTok will not face an immediate shutdown but could transition to new ownership.

For now, TikTok users in the U.S. should stay informed as the situation develops. Whether the app remains operational depends on the success of ongoing negotiations and potential last-minute interventions by lawmakers.
